IN BRIEF : Racehorse Dies After N.J. Crash

STRATFORD, Conn. — A $35,000 racehorse being taken to a track in New Jersey was killed when the trailer carrying it jackknifed into a guardrail on Interstate 95, throwing it down an embankment.

Motoring Dean, a 7-year-old pacer that had been listed as a 15-to-1 long shot, died about an hour after the accident despite rescue efforts by emergency medical technicians.

The horse had been scheduled to make its first start in a year Thursday night at the Meadowlands, competing for a $7,500 purse in a mile race.

Miguel Paquette of Wrentham, Mass., the horse’s owner, trainer and driver, was driving south on the highway when another car cut him off, state police said. Paquette told troopers the trailer jackknifed when he put on his brakes, causing his pickup to roll over and crash into the guardrail.

The horse was thrown out of the trailer and tumbled down the hill into a tree, breaking a leg.
