“ROMANZAS DE ZARZUELAS.” Placido Domingo, tenor. Orquesta Sinfonica de Madrid, Coro del Teatro Lirico Nacional, conducted by Manuel Moreno-Buendia. EMI CDC 7 49148 2 (compact disc). The selections on Domingo’s newest zarzuela collection are opulently sung, and include both familiar works and relative rarities, though again bypassing the mid-19th-Century Golden Age of the genre. Domingo has been carefully preparing his post-tenorial musical life as a conductor--here, in what may be another logical career move, he adds baritone roles to his repertory, jacked up a step or two. Moreno-Buendia & Co. back him solidly, and the text translations are a plus. But ignore the brief, misinformative annotation.
