Slaney Sets 1,000 Record; Kingdom Loses to Blake

PORTLAND, Ore. — Mary Slaney set an American indoor record in the women’s 1,000 meters Saturday night at the U.S. West-KOIN Indoor track and field meet.
Cheered on by the crowd in her adopted home state, Slaney, 30, was clocked in 2 minutes 37.60 seconds, breaking the old mark of 2:37.9 set by Joetta Clark in 1986.
Slaney’s time was 2.80 seconds off the world indoor record.
Earlier, Arthur Blake edged two-time Olympic gold medalist Roger Kingdom to win the 55-meter hurdles.
The 22-year-old athlete from Tallahassee, Fla., a finalist in the 110-meter hurdles at the Seoul Olympics, won in a relatively slow 7.11 seconds.
Kingdom, racing just 24 hours after beating Greg Foster at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, was second in 7.13.
