An unidentified pedestrian, about 20 years old, was killed at 5 a.m. Thursday as he was crossing northbound Interstate 5 near the San Onofre checkpoint, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The man was hit by a car, then hit by a truck 15 minutes later, officers said. He also appeared to have been run over by several other vehicles, said Deputy Coroner Jerry Hillbrand.
Police suspect the man was crossing the road with a group of illegal aliens, who fled.
