Memories of Kovic

Re “Bringing the War Home” by Jay Sharbutt, Jan. 22:
As a combat marine (‘68-69) I lost seven classmates/comrades. As a journalist in 1972-73 I was covering anti-war demonstrations at Cal State Fullerton when I wrote the first of several stories on paraplegic protester Ron Kovic. I knew he touched a nerve because the first time I saw him speak he made students cry.
One day an editor told me not to do any more “Kovic pieces.” I asked why. The editor replied, “because he upsets people.” This in the middle of Watergate from a newspaper editor. I will never forget it.
