Lorraine Moller of New Zealand, running alone for the last 9 miles, won a women’s international marathon at Osaka, Japan, for the third time.
Moller finished the 26.2 miles in 2 hours 30 minutes 21 seconds, more than 250 yards ahead of Renata Kokowska of Poland, who clocked 2:31:19. Third was Gabriela Wolf of West Germany in 2:31.45, followed by Japan’s Kazue Kojima in 2:34.56.
Favored Rosa Mota of Portugal, 1988 Seoul Olympic gold medalist, retired after 16.9 miles, apparently because of pain in her calf.
