Women’s Basketball Roundup : Long Beach Gets Past Las Vegas

The Cal State Long Beach women’s basketball team, ranked ninth in the country, had an off night shooting from the field but made some key free throws down the stretch and defeated 19th-ranked Nevada Las Vegas, 85-81, Monday night in a Big West Conference game at Las Vegas.
The 49ers made only 27 of 73 field-goal attempts (37%), but sank 28 of 35 free throws (80%).
After a free throw by the 49ers’ Janet Haneberg tied the game, 77-77, with 3:17 left, two free throws by senior Shameil Coleman put the 49ers ahead to stay at 79-77 with 3:06 left.
Penny Toler scored 25 points to lead Long Beach (14-4 overall, 8-0 in conference). Pauline Jordan, who fouled out before Haneberg’s game-tying free throw, scored 24 points for the Rebels (16-3, 6-3).
Washington 79, UCLA 68--Amy Mickelson scored 24 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the Huskies over the Bruins in a nationally televised Pacific 10 game at Seattle.
