A Small Price to Pay

The Salas artwork, “Night Visions,” which stretches out along San Diego’s Park Boulevard like Burma Shave signs in the Twilight Zone, is amusing and provocative. I take out-of-town guests by to see it and ask them to name each separate piece. The answers are very revealing.
The idea that the city should have paid anything for it, however, even $11,000, is more than a little disturbing. Many homeless people, some of them mentally ill, camp in the dense bushes not 50 yards to the east of these signposts. Social services in San Diego, as in every other city in America, are chronically underfunded. That $11,000 could have been used in any number of ways to benefit them. The fun the rest of us would miss out on seems a small price to pay.
