Local News in Brief : Trash Collection Cost Called Too High
- Share via
Trash collection in the city of Los Angeles could be done far more cheaply by private haulers than by the current corps of city crews and trucks, a report by the Santa Monica-based Reason Foundation concluded.
The study, sponsored by the Los Angeles Taxpayers Assn., said other governmental levels that use private rubbish disposal, including Los Angeles County, are able to provide the service more economically.
As much as $56 million could be saved in the annual city budget by switching to private hauling, the Reason report said.
City trucks now pick up trash from single-family homes. Apartment and business rubbish service in Los Angeles is provided by private haulers.
