TYRE, Lebanon — An armored personnel carrier skidded off the road in southeast Lebanon on Monday, killing a Norwegian soldier of the U.N. peacekeeping force and injuring another, a U.N. spokesman said.
The accident occurred near the town of Rachaiya in the foothills of Mt. Hermon, 2 miles north of Israel’s self-designated security zone in southern Lebanon, spokesman Timur Goksel said.
The accident brought U.N. fatalities to 159 since the 5,844-strong force was deployed in southern Lebanon in 1978 to serve as a buffer between Israel and Palestinian guerrillas. Among those killed were 16 Norwegians.
