Logger, Hit by Limb, Undergoes Surgery on Back of Pickup

REW, Pa. — A logger who underwent surgery on the back of a pickup after being carried more than a mile to a clearing was listed in critical condition Wednesday.
Randall Crippen, 24, of Shinglehouse, suffered head and face injuries when he was struck Tuesday by the limb of a falling tree, said Dena Michaelson, spokeswoman at Hamot Medical Center in Erie.
Dr. Glenn Irwin of Bradford Hospital said he performed a procedure, similar to a tracheotomy, that involved cutting a hole in the man’s throat to open a passage in his windpipe. Irwin worked on the back of a pickup with instruments he brought from the hospital.
The operation took place at the end of a dirt logging trail.
