Six County Surfers Win in First Round

John Parmenter and Bud Llamas of Huntington Beach won their opening-round heats Wednesday in the Cold Water surfing tournament at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz.
Other Orange County surfers to advance were Mike Gillard, Darren Brilhart, Bobby Lockhart and Dylan Crouch. All are from Huntington Beach.
Chris Brown of Santa Barbara, 1988 world amateur champion, and Chris Mauro of San Clemente were upset Wednesday.
The event, which continues through Sunday, is the first stop on the 1989 Assn. of Surfing Professionals world tour.
