Saving the Earth’s Environment: ‘Planet in Trouble’ and U.S. Aid

To me the World Resources Institute’s proposal for an International Environmental Decade (Op-Ed, Feb. 16) deserves all-out U.S. backing. First, consider the stated aim--then beyond it a bonus that is equally critical.
The aim is to get the reversal of some potentially disastrous trends--soil degradation, water and air pollution, ozone-layer destruction and the warming of the whole globe from the greenhouse effect. This reversal would come from getting “world political leaders (to) devise a new system of international responsibility--burden-sharing to sustain the Earth and its peoples.”
The bonus is that the tide of cooperation that reverses environmental threats will likewise reverse today’s preparations for nuclear war--the greatest environmental threat of all.
