Leading authors and publishers, saying 80 million books printed on acidic paper are disintegrating in U.S. libraries, launched a crusade for the use of longer-lasting alkaline paper. A document signed by 92 authors and publishers at the New York Public Library declared a commitment “to use acid-free paper for all first printings of quality hard-cover trade books in order to preserve the printed word and safeguard our cultural heritage for future generations.”
