Monterey Park : Agency to Aid Immigrants

With the opening of the Asian Newcomer Youth Project in Monterey Park, young immigrants from Asia now have a social services agency to assist them in the San Gabriel Valley.
The United Way-sponsored program plans an open house on March 16 to introduce the project and its director, May L. To. For the last nine years she has been helping Asian refugees and immigrants in the region, most recently as executive assistant of the Chinatown Service Center. Fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, To graduated in sociology from the Chinese University in Hong Kong and received her master’s in education from UCLA.
The project is designed to counsel young Asian immigrants and help them find recreational, job and tutoring opportunities. Five agencies are involved: the Asian Pacific Family Center, the Asian American Drug Abuse Program, the Chinatown Service Center, the Monterey Park Boys and Girls Club and the United Chinese Restaurant Assn.
The open house will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a program starting at 6 p.m., at the project office, 1111 S. Atlantic Blvd., Room 104.
