Prep Baseball Roundup : Mater Dei Defeats Corona del Mar, 3-2

Scott Corliss had a no-hitter for 4 2/3 innings and Mater Dei High School went on to defeat Corona del Mar, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the Newport-Mesa baseball tournament Wednesday at Mater Dei.
Corliss (1-0) struck out 10 and didn’t allow a hit until Grady Lamar doubled with two outs in the fifth. Brian Frankel went the final two innings, striking out two, for the save.
The Monarchs (3-1) scored three runs in the fourth. Juan Zarate doubled home the first run. Greg Carl and Jeff Chiccarella had run-scoring singles in the inning.
Lamar’s double in the fifth scored Todd Kerhli, who had walked. Todd Muth had a run-scoring double for the Sea Kings in the sixth.
In other Newport-Mesa tournament quarterfinal games:
Foothill 13, El Modena 3--Corey Parker had two hits, including a key single in the top of the fifth, to lead the Knights (2-0) at Foothill. The Knights scored six times in the fifth to take a 11-3 lead. Parker had a bases-loaded single to drive in two runs and a third run scored on an error on the play. Greg Scott pitched five innings for the victory. Scott (1-0) struck out three and allowed three runs. Matt Neubrand had two hits and one RBI for El Modena (1-3).
Mission Viejo 7, Santa Ana 1--Don Disbro had four hits and two RBIs to lead the Diablos (2-0) at Mission Viejo. Eric Cedarstaff went six innings, allowing two hits, for the victory. Cedarstaff (1-0) struck out five and allowed only an unearned run.
Tustin 12, Esperanza 4--Shawn Green had two hits and scored three times to lead the Tillers (2-)) at Tustin. Monte Jones (1-0) went six innings, striking out two, for the victory.
In the consolation round:
Capistrano Valley 4, Estancia 1--Mike Mosebrook threw a two-hitter to lead the Cougars (2-2) at Estancia. Mosebrook (2-0) struck out six. Buster Nietzke had three hits, including a double and a solo home run, for Capistrano Valley.
Costa Mesa 5, Newport Harbor 4 (9 innings)--Costa Mesa rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game and scored two in the ninth. Tim Yuen’s two-run single in the seventh tied it. In the ninth, Hue Kieu tripled in a run to give Costa Mesa (1-3) a 4-3 lead. Dave Sallady then singled in Kieu. Newport Harbor fell to 0-3-1.
Orange 7, Saddleback 6--Jesus Romo tripled in two runs in the bottom of the seventh to give the Panthers (1-1) the victory at Corona del Mar High. Romo also had a two-run homer. Mike Arroyos had two hits, including a two-run homer for Saddleback.
In the El Segundo tournament:
Edison 6, Long Beach Poly 6--Edison advanced to the semifinals because of more total bases. J.J. Thobe had three hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs for the Chargers (1-0-2).
Westminster 7, Newhall Hart 4--Brian Stubbs pitched five innings, allowing three hits and a walk and striking out five, for the victory in a quarterfinal game at Westminster. Stubbs helped his cause at the plate, with two hits and two RBIs.
Brea-Olinda 7, Lynwood 2--Mike Hudak had two hits and two RBIs for Brea (3-1) in a consolation game at Lynwood. Marc Kaiser pitched a four-hitter.
In the Oceanside tournament:
Laguna Beach 6, El Camino 2--Aaron Scheid pitched a one-hitter to lead the Artists (2-0) in a first-round game at El Camino. Scheid struck out five and allowed only a third-inning single. Mica Brown had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs for Laguna Beach.
In nonleague play:
Valencia 9, Rancho Alamitos 5--Rudy Lopez had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs to lead the Tigers (2-0) at Valencia. John Garcia went five innings for the victory. Garcia (1-0) struck out five and allowed three runs.
