Shamir Rejects Think Tank’s Peace Plan

JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir said Thursday that proposals by the nation’s leading strategic think tank to end Arab-Israeli strife by negotiating with the Palestine Liberation Organization are biased and dangerous.
A six-month study by the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies tentatively endorsed the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip after a 10-to-15-year period of limited self-rule.
It also called for Israel to halt Jewish settlement in the occupied lands and talk to the PLO, regarded by Israel as a terrorist group.
“It will weaken Israel, weaken our will of Israel to withstand pressure, and will strengthen those who are against us,” Shamir, leader of the rightist Likud Party, told Israel Radio.
“I do not think they (the researchers) were objective.”
