New U.S. Commander Picked for Persian Gulf

MANAMA, Bahrain — A new commander will take charge of U.S. naval forces in the Persian Gulf on Thursday, and three Navy mine sweepers are ending their 18-month duty tours in the waterway.
The departure of the mine sweepers, all based on the East Coast, will leave the United States with 11 ships in the gulf.
Meanwhile, Rear Adm. William M. Fogarty, who led the official inquiry into the shooting down of an Iranian jetliner by the Navy cruiser Vincennes on July 3, 1988, will take command of the U.S. task force in the gulf on Thursday.
Fogarty replaces Rear Adm. Anthony A. Less.
