Alemany High scored six runs in the first inning and Tom Daniels threw a six-hitter as the Indians defeated Crespi, 7-2, in a Del Rey League opener Tuesday at College of the Canyons.
Ten batters came to the plate against Crespi starter Chad Nichols in the first inning, and Jon Beauchemin, John Lite, Kirk Fellows and Jeff Ordona each produced a run-scoring single.
Alemany added another run in the third when Fellows, who had walked and advanced to third on Leo Tejada’s double, scored on a wild pitch.
Almost lost in the shadow of the first inning was the pitching of Daniels (2-2). The senior right-hander gave up only two hits in the final four innings.
Crespi scored in the second when Andy MacDonald singled home Chris Romero, who led off with a double, and again in the third when Nichols’ grounder scored Mark Maurizi. Maurizi was two for two, walked once and was hit by a pitch.
The offensive outburst was a welcome sight for Alemany Coach Jim Ozella, who lost ace left-hander Joey Rosselli with a broken hand before the season began and second baseman Scott Goldsmith, who sprained his ankle playing basketball, this week.
“We’re going to have to hit the ball until Joey gets back,” Ozella said.
