Local News in Brief : Major School Policy Changes Proposed
- Share via
Los Angeles school board member Jackie Goldberg on Thursday proposed sweeping changes in district policy that would reduce the salary gap between teachers and administrators, enable teachers to earn more money if they undertake extra responsibilities and require administrators to return part-time to teaching at least every other year.
Goldberg said the proposals were an attempt to address larger issues that have inflamed teachers in the last several months of a bitter contract dispute.
Although she said she supports the school board’s latest contract offer to teachers, which includes a 20% pay raise over three years, she said the district should consider a “complete overhaul” of its practices, including policies that allow administrators access to district-paid cars and enable other non-teaching employees to earn overtime pay.
The board member said that the motions, which she will formally introduce next week, would take two to three years to be implemented.
