In Empire League baseball openers:
Cypress 6, Esperanza 6 (8 innings, darkness)--Visiting Cypress trailed Esperanza, 6-1, entering the top of the sixth inning, but rallied to tie. A two-run double by Bob Hunt and four walks helped aid the Cypress rally. Esperanza is 5-1-2.
Katella 6, Los Alamitos 5 (8 innings)--Katella scored two runs in the top of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie. Billy Fitzgerald had a three-run home run in the fifth for Katella (4-4) in the league opener at Los Alamitos.
El Dorado 3, Loara 0--Greg Fife had two hits and scored a run for El Dorado (7-2). Erich Munzner had two hits, including a double, for Loara (1-5). Matt Luke notched his third win.
In Pacific Coast League baseball openers:
Trabuco Hills 11, Orange 7--Greg Hughes’ two hits and two RBIs paced Trabuco Hills (3-1) at Orange. Pitcher David Lowery (3-0) also had two hits.
Costa Mesa 5, Laguna Beach 2--Mike Cutler of Costa Mesa threw a complete game, allowing four hits and no earned runs at Costa Mesa. Dave Salladay had three hits for the winners.
In Sea View League baseball openers:
Saddleback 4, Estancia 1--Mike Arroyos (1-1) pitched a three-hitter and went four for four with a solo home run and two RBIs for Saddleback (3-4) at Estancia.
Corona del Mar 9, University 7--The Sea Kings scored two runs in the top of the seventh on a dropped fly ball to break a 7-7 tie at University. Todd Kehrli had three hits and 5 RBIs for the Sea Kings (2-4, 1-0). First baseman Al Marlinga (3-3) had a three-run homer for the Trojans.
Tustin 13, Newport Harbor 2--Erik Grove went three for three with four RBIs and Monte Jones went three for four and scored four runs for Tustin.
