John Tower’s Rejection by the Senate

The Senate’s rejection of Tower is a serious, but only temporary, setback to the military-industrial complex. Tower’s record provided ample proof that he was suitably fanatic to be acceptable to the military, while the Senate hearings offered convincing evidence that he was sufficiently corrupt and corruptible to be acceptable to industry.
It is a pity that the Constitution does not require similar congressional approval of all vice presidential candidates, for we might have thereby avoided the embarrassment and humiliation of demonstrating to the entire world the appalling (and probably valid) contempt our current President has for the judgment and perception of the American electorate.
