Point Nazarene Sets 4 Records in GSAC Track

Point Loma Nazarene College was responsible for four of the nine Golden State Athletic Conference records broken at Saturday’s conference track championships held in Azusa Pacific Stadium.

The PLNC men placed second with 108 points behind Azusa Pacific with 174. Point Loma’s women also finished second to Azusa Pacific. PLNC’s total of 78.5 was 50.5 points behind the winners.

The PLNC men set standards in the 3200 relay and the triple jump. The quartet of Ramsey McNeal, Mike Maynard, Kris Anderson and J.K. Strandberg clocked a 7:42.27, bettering the old mark of 7:44.60 set by Westmont College in 1987.

Christian Andreasson broke the old triple jump mark of 45-feet 2 1/2-inches by nailing a 48-7 1/2 jump.

The records set by the Point Loma women also came in the 3200 relay and the triple jump.

Amanda Houlton, Vanessa Couch, Kris Pinard and Sandi Cuevas completed the relay in 9:43.9. Cal Lutheran set the previous best in 1988 with a time of 9:54.46.

In the triple jump, Kristina Young broke Susanne Johansson’s record of 35-4 1/2 with a jump of 35-10 1/4. Johansson, of PLNC, set the old mark last year.

Young also took first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15:39.

SOFTBALL

Twentieth-ranked USIU may fall out of the rankings when the new poll comes out later this week. For the first time this season, the Lady Gulls dropped a doubleheader as the University of Iowa defeated USIU, 5-0 and 4-1.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Host University of San Diego defeated Iowa, 9-0, in a nonconference match.

Aby Brayton (No. 1) and Jennifer Larking (No. 2) won singles matches for USD (13-4), before teamming for another victory at No. 1 doubles.

San Diego State was defeated by host BYU, 6-3, losing four of six singles matches and two of three doubles.

BASEBALL

Point Loma Nazarene College and Cal Baptist traded runaways in a double header as host Cal-Baptist took the opener, 11-2, then fell in the nightcap, 18-4.

Cal-Baptist hit four homers in the first game, including three in the fifth inning. Point Loma countered in the second with a grand slam from Craig Gastineau in the second inning.

John Danis also homered in the second game for PLNC. He also went four for five with five RBIs.

Ron Caton went six for eight on the day for PLNC.
