Residents of a tenement struggle to overcome poverty and racism in “The Women of Brewster Place,” a two-part ABC drama airing 9 to 11 p.m. Sunday and Monday on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42.
Based on the novel by Gloria Naylor, the story covers several decades in the lives of seven black women who strive to triumph over adversity and disillusionment.
Oprah Winfrey and Robin Givens (on the cover) are two of the film’s stars. Winfrey portrays Mattie Michael, who moves to Brewster Place as a last resort after losing her home. Givens plays an idealistic tenant who fights for a change in the building.
Other prominent roles are played by Jackee, Paula Kelly, Lonette McKee, Phyllis Yvonne Stickney and Lynn Whitfield.
