NATION : Democratic Party Chief Breaks With Jackson, Urges Support for Daley

CHICAGO — Democratic Chairman Ron Brown urged his party today to unite behind Richard Daley in next month’s Chicago mayoral election.
“We all know that tough contests and hard-fought politics are nothing new to Democrats and certainly not to Democrats in Chicago,” said Brown, a political ally of the Rev. Jesse Jackson who is actively opposing Daley’s bid.
“We must steadfastly work to unify all Democrats in this city, this state and, indeed, this nation,” said Brown, the first black to head a major U.S. political party.
Daley last month captured the party’s nomination to run for the office his father held for 21 years, defeating acting Mayor Eugene Sawyer, a black. At stake are the remaining two years of the late Harold Washington’s second term.
