Local News in Brief : Panel Will Examine Weapons at Schools

The Los Angeles Board of Education agreed Monday to establish a task force to study ways to eliminate guns, knives and other weapons from school campuses.
Proposed by West San Fernando Valley board member Julie Korenstein, who cited a rising incidence of weapon possession in some parts of the district, the task force will include teachers, administrators, community leaders and representatives of the district attorney, the city attorney and law enforcement.
Among the issues that the group could examine is the use of metal detectors, board members indicated. The task force’s recommendations will be due by June 30.
The motion passed on a 6-0 vote, with South-Central Los Angeles board member Rita Walters abstaining.
