NEW ORLEANS — Oil workers Tuesday found five bodies aboard an offshore oil platform that exploded and burned in the Gulf of Mexico, and the search for two missing men continued, an official said.
The oil production platform about 100 miles southeast of New Orleans and an adjacent platform connected by a 50-foot catwalk were hit by the explosion Sunday.
Workers for Atlantic Richfield Oil Co., which operated the platforms, boarded the fire-scorched rig Tuesday once it was decided it was safe to do so, said Arco spokesman Earl Sims.
Forty-two people were aboard the rig when the explosion hit. Of the 35 who escaped, 10 were injured.
