Prep Roundup : Estancia Loses in Tournament Final

Leuzinger High School broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning and defeated Estancia, 6-4, Wednesday in the final of the Newport/Mesa Pride of the Coast tournament at Estancia.
The Olympians (9-1-1) had six consecutive hits in the sixth. Tyrone Scott had a two-run double and Mark Scott followed with a two-run homer.
The Eagles (7-4) scored four runs with one out in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run double by Marco Vasquez and an RBI double by Lenny Herman.
In other Newport/Mesa tournament games:
Capistrano Valley 8, La Mirada 5 (8 innings)--Pinch-hitter John Mackay hit a three-run home run with one out in the bottom of the eighth for the Cougars in the third-place game at Corona del Mar. Buster Nietzke hit a grand slam in the third to give the Cougars (7-3) a 4-2 lead. After Capistrano Valley scored another run to take a 5-2 lead, La Mirada scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the score, 5-5. Mike Mosebrook (4-0) pitched a complete game for the Cougars, giving up only two earned runs. La Mirada is 5-5.
Bolsa Grande 2, Corona del Mar 0--Jerry Maldonado (4-2) pitched a three-hitter, striking out 13, for the Matadors (7-3) in the consolation final at Newport Harbor. Maldonado also scored Bolsa Grande’s first run, scoring from second on a throwing error by Corona del Mar catcher Ellis Kehzcia in the first inning. Rich Tantardini had an RBI single in the first. Corona del Mar is 4-6.
Los Amigos 8, Orange Lutheran 7--Shane Rumney had two hits and three RBIs for Los Amigos (3-8) in a consolation-round game at Corona del Mar. Rumney had a two-run homer in the first and a run-scoring double in the second. Felipe Montes hit a solo home run in the fourth and Geoff Burns hit a two-run homer in the sixth for the Lobos.
Rancho Alamitos 9, Newport Harbor 4--Gar Vallone had two hits and three RBIs for Rancho Alamitos (6-3) in a consolation-round game at Newport Harbor. The Vaqueros broke the game open with a six-run fifth. Vallone had a two-run double in the inning. Ken McFarland (1-0) pitched three innings in relief for the victory. Ted Martinez had two hits and an RBI for Newport Harbor.
In the Angelus League:
Servite 5, Bishop Amat 3--Tom Jacobs hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Friars (7-3-1, 2-1) a 5-3 lead at Bishop Amat. Sophomore Cliff Mierendorf (1-0) pitched a four-hitter, striking out four, for the victory.
In the Orange Glen tournament:
San Diego Madison 7, Ocean View 5--Madison scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh in the championship game at Kit Carson Park in Escondido. Jennifer Land capped the rally with a two-run single.
In the Woodbridge softball tournament:
Huntington Beach 2, El Toro 0--Pam Fogg pitched a six-hitter, striking out six for the Oilers in the third-place game.
El Dorado 1, Garden Grove 0--Keri Lucas pitched a four-hitter, striking out four, for El Dorado in the consolation final.
In nonleague softball:
Rosary 9, Connelly 3--Maryanne Martin had three hits with two runs scored for Rosary (4-3) at Connelly. Joanne Hecht had two hits and two runs scored and Anne Haraksin had two RBIs for Rosary.
In Angelus League boys’ track and field:
Bishop Montgomery 67, Mater Dei 60--Mike Nielsen ran 4:28.8 in the 1,600 meters for Mater Dei at Redondo Beach High.
Servite 74, St. Paul 50--Matt Roundtree won the 330-yard hurdles (41.72 seconds) and 120 hurdles (16.0) for Servite at St. Paul.
In Angelus League girls’ track and field:
Mater Dei 79, Bishop Montgomery 44--Melissa McDonald had four first-place finishes for the Monarchs at Redondo Beach High. McDonald won the 400 meters (59.2), the high jump (5-4), the long jump and 200 meters.
