CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A jumbo jet carrying the space shuttle Discovery landed here today, concluding a cross-country journey home after an overnight stop in Texas.
The Boeing 747 transport took off from Kelly Air Force Base near San Antonio shortly before 10 a.m. and arrived at the Kennedy Space Center here three hours later, touching down on a runway just three miles from the launch pad where Discovery started a space journey more than a week ago. After removing the shuttle from the transport, NASA will begin grooming it for a classified Defense Department mission in August.
