William Jay Schieffelin III: Headed Importing Company

William Jay Schieffelin III, 67, the seventh generation of his family to head Schieffelin & Co., a wine and spirit importer. Schieffelin joined the company, founded in 1794 as a pharmaceutical concern, in 1948. He was named vice president for pharmaceutical laboratories in 1949 and became chairman and chief executive in 1962, retiring from active control of the company in 1983. He also was chairman of Almay Inc., a cosmetics business, and head of the Simi Winery of Healdsburg, Calif. In Mt. Kisco, N.Y., on Thursday of undisclosed causes.
