Man Burned After House Blast, Fire

A man alone in a vacant house in Anaheim received second- and third-degree burns over 30% of his face, chest and arms Saturday when an explosion occurred inside the house and started a fire, authorities said.
The victim, Steve Volman, 33, was treated by paramedics and then rushed to the UCI Medical Center in Orange.
The single-family house, on North Elmwood Street was heavily damaged by the explosion, which is under investigation by the Anaheim Fire Department. A department spokesman said the house is owned by Paul Kott of Paul Kott Realty in Anaheim. The spokesman said the cause of the explosion is uncertain, but it apparently was a natural-gas explosion.
It took Anaheim firefighters 9 minutes to bring the resulting fire under control.
Damage to the structure was estimated at $75,000. The house contained no furnishings, the spokesman said.
No details were released on why Volman was at the house. Kott could not be reached for comment.
