Anaheim Pianist Wins 2 Prizes in Chapman Event

David Andruss, 19, of Anaheim was a dual winner at the ninth annual Young Keyboard Artists Assn. International Piano Competition, March 19 to 25 at Chapman College in Orange.

Andruss won a Young Chang 7-foot grand piano valued at $15,000, plus $500 in cash for winning the concerto division, in which he played Prokofiev’s First Concerto.

He also won the first-place award--and $500--in Division 6, for pianists 18 to 20 years old.

The junior winner in the concerto division was Stacey Su, 12, from Fresno, who played Prokofiev’s Third Concerto.

Su won $300 and a future performance with the Pacific Symphony. The date of the concert has not been scheduled.

Other winners in Division 6 included:

--Clara Bohr, 18, from Omaha, Neb., second place and $300.

--Helen Wu, 18, from Irvine, third place, $200. Wu also captured second place in the senior concerto division.

The competition drew an initial enrollment of 550 contestants--ages 5 1/2 to 20--from 19 Western states, China and the Soviet Union.

About 332 musicians took part at Chapman College in six divisions, according to age and a two-tiered concerto competition.
