Battered Women
Hedda Nussbaum was a battered drug-taking woman, as far from the concept of a “mother” as is ever imaginable. Dworkin has made Hedda Nussbaum the battered wife/mother figure of this tragic case.
Dworkin forgets that Hedda Nussbaum is alive and the real victim of this case is the dead child, Lisa Steinberg, who never knew the love and care of a real mother. A mother protects her child against all odds--and I don’t care if that mother is battered to a pulp.
With Nussbaum as her mother image, Lisa was lost from the first day Hedda touched her.
