Wafer Project Ahead of Schedule: Officials of the Sematech chip-making partnership announced the manufacture of their first silicon wafers and said their results show Japanese competitors that American companies can work together. The processing of the first lot of silicon wafers from beginning to end through the “clean room” facility at Sematech, a research consortium of 14 U.S. high-technology companies, was completed three days early and less than a year after Sematech moved into its Austin, Tex., headquarters.
