Local News in Brief : Newport Beach : Motorcycle Passenger Fatally Hurt in Crash

A Newport Beach man was fatally injured when a motorcycle he was riding ran into a parked car, throwing him into a fire hydrant, authorities said Thursday.

The victim was Frederic M. Boom, 20. He was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by Arian Eskanderi, 19, of Irvine when the accident occurred about 9:16 p.m. Wednesday. Eskanderi was hospitalized with injuries.

The motorcycle, traveling west on Mariners Drive, was approaching Rutland Road when it failed to negotiate a curve and hit the parked car, Newport Beach Police Officer Bob Oakley said.

Oakley said witnesses told police that Eskanderi was giving Boom a test ride on the motorcycle, and that it appeared to be traveling about 70 m.p.h. Neither man was wearing a helmet, Oakley said.

The two had been at a nearby party but neither appeared to be inebriated, Oakley said. Results of blood-alcohol tests would be available within 2 weeks, he said.

Boom suffered internal injuries and was pronounced dead at Hoag Hospital a short time after the crash.

Eskanderi was admitted to Hoag with a broken hip and internal injuries. Oakley said Eskanderi will be held on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter when he is released from the hospital.
