NAMES IN THE NEWS : Marcos Asks U.S. Pay Medical Bills

HONOLULU — Ferdinand E. Marcos’ attorney is demanding that the U.S. government pay $202,000 in medical bills for the former Philippine president, claiming his client is being held here against his will.
“The Marcoses did not come here on their own. They were abducted and the United States government has responsibility for them as long as they’re forced to remain here,” attorney Ronald Oldenburg said late Thursday.
“Mrs. Marcos has borrowed from all the friends she can,” he said. “The bills must be paid and she can’t do it.”
Besides the claim that Marcos, who is reported to be a multimillionaire, was tricked into Hawaiian exile, Oldenburg said Marcos deserved veteran benefits because he served for the United States during World War II.
