If ever an architect deserves support from those in our industry, it is after reading Leon Whiteson’s scathing critique (March 19) of Tim Vreeland’s newest work, Home Savings Tower.
As a representative of the construction industry, I can honestly say that we often don’t aesthetically like what we build, and comments similar to Whiteson’s are sometimes appropriate. But that is not the case here. Vreeland and his staff at A.C. Martin & Associates have created a true masterpiece, one that has made the owners, Ahmanson Commercial Development, very proud, and one that has the overwhelming approval of the real estate community.
As contractors, our input to the design process is usually limited to estimating and scheduling of alternative components, systems and layouts. Usually, for economic reasons, we see numerous beautiful structures on the drawing board end up like the dreaded glass boxes. Fortunately, Home Savings Tower actually improved throughout the design and construction process, and the end result is one that most of us will enjoy for many years.
