Little Competition for ‘Wanda,’ ‘Die Hard’

None of the ballyhooed Easter releases has been strong enough to overthrow “A Fish Called Wanda” (No. 1) or “Die Hard” (No. 2), which have been dominating the Billboard rental chart for the last month. “Fish” got a boost from Kevin Kline’s best supporting actor Oscar and “Die Hard” is simply one of the most popular action-adventure movies of the last few years, rivaling “RoboCop” and “Aliens.” Newcomer “ ‘Crocodile’ Dundee II,” a box-office blockbuster, is creeping up--it’s now No. 3--but at a pace slower than expected. “Big,” featuring Tom Hanks, is No. 6 after two weeks. “Punchline,” that other Hanks movie, is catching up with “Big,” jumping to No. 9.
* “Betrayed,” a drama about a love affair between a white supremacist (Tom Berenger) and an undercover FBI agent (Debra Winger), did good-office business ($24.9 million) and, consequently, is doing admirable rental business. It’s No. 11 after two weeks and has a fair shot at making the Top Five.
