Former Cal State Chico football star Steven Crittenden was convicted by an Auburn jury of torturing and murdering a prominent Chico couple while robbing them. Crittenden showed no emotion as the jurors found him guilty in the deaths of Dr. William Chiapella, 68, and his wife, Katherine, 67, who were bound, gagged, stabbed and beaten in their home in January, 1987. Crittenden, 20, faces a possible death sentence because he was convicted of three special circumstances, including multiple murders, torture and murder in the commission of a robbery.
