About 20,000 striking Korean workers and students clashed with riot police in Seoul and seven other cities, and dissidents announced plans for weekend demonstrations in defiance of a government ban. Officials said two riot troopers were seriously injured in the industrial city of Changwon, where about 10,000 striking workers fought police with rocks and firebombs, demanding freedom for jailed strike leaders. About 1,000 students in Kwangju clashed with police after a campus rally at which they burned effigies of President Roh Tae Woo and President Bush.
