WORLD : Sudan Rebel Chief Proclaims Truce

KHARTOUM, Sudan — Rebel leader John Garang proclaimed a one-month cease-fire today in the nation’s 6-year-old civil war, raising hopes of a permanent peace and easing the work of relief agencies trying to feed 2 million people in the famine-threatened south.
The move, announced on the clandestine radio of the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army, followed a series of offers from the recently restructured Khartoum government of Prime Minister Sadek Mahdi to end the war, which has claimed more than 1 million lives.
Garang said the cease-fire will facilitate the shipment of food to southern Sudan.
