LOCAL : Taft High School Students Win Academic Decathlon’s Top Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Taft High School of Woodland Hills emerged the winner today in an international student decathlon considered the top academic competition for U.S. high schools.
The eighth annual U.S. Academic Decathlon included evaluations of public speaking, poise during interviews and written examinations and was conducted at the Community College of Rhode Island’s Warwick campus.
Taft won the “Super Quiz” part of the competition on Saturday. Two teams tied for second place in the quiz, Mentor High School in Ohio and Deer Park High School in the Houston suburb where the decathlon originated.
About 400 students from 37 states and two foreign countries participated in the competition.
The competition began Friday.
