Pernell Whitaker stopped Louie Lomeli at 2:43 of the third round to retain his International Boxing Federation lightweight title at Norfolk, Va.
Whitaker (18-1) dropped Lomeli with an overhand left at 2:30 of the round. Lomeli (24-1) got up, but after a series of uncontested combinations by Whitaker, referee Al Rothenberg haltedthe contest.
