Trio Wins 625-Mile Auto Race in Japan

GOTEMBA, Japan — The Omron Porsche driven by Vern Schuppan of Australia, Eje Elgh of Sweden and Keiji Matsumoto of Japan won the All-Japan Fuji 625-mile race by 14 seconds Sunday.
The winning team sped 224 laps around the 2.77-mile Fuji Speedway in 5 hours 30 minutes 36.816 seconds, at an average speed of 112.66 m.p.h.
Driving a Nisseki Trust Porsche, George Fouche of Zimbabwe and Steven Andskar of Sweden finished second in 5:30:51.215.
Third were Japan’s Masahiro Hasemi and Sweden’s Anders Olofsson in a YHP Nissan R88C, timed in 5:31:00.007 for 223 laps.
A total of 17 cars started and 13 finished the race.
