The World : Apartheid Opponent Slain
A prominent white anti-apartheid activist was shot and killed outside his home in suburban Johannesburg, South Africa, by an assailant firing from a passing car, police said. Colleagues said they believe that David J. Webster, 44, was assassinated because of his political activities. He was shot in the back as he unloaded his van in Troyville after a trip to a garden center and bakery with a companion, who was not hurt. Webster was a lecturer in social anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He was a founding member of Five Freedoms Forum, which has campaigned against segregation, and was active in the Detainees Parents Support Committee before its restriction last year under a state of emergency.
