‘Dundee II’ No Hit at Home

For a movie that grossed $109 million at the box office, “ ‘Crocodile’ Dundee II” is not as big a rental as expected. Not that it’s a flop. For the last few weeks, it’s been No. 3 on the Billboard magazine chart. But mega-grossing movies like this usually wind up as No. 1 rentals. Strangely, though, “Dundee II” has never been No. 1. Buoyed by Sigourney Weaver’s Oscar-nominated performance, newcomer “Gorillas in the Mist,” which earned $22.5 million at the box office, is scrambling quickly up the rental chart--perching at No. 6. John Carpenter’s horror-thriller “They Live,” which grossed a respectable $12.2 million, is doing decent rental business (No. 27).
* The big horror hit of the next few months appears likely to be “Child’s Play,” the grisly adventures of Chucky, a doll possessed by an evil spirit. A sleeper box-office hit, “Child’s Play,” which took in $30.7 million, debuted at No. 38 but could make the Top 10 easily.
