The State : Minor Quake Jars Southland

A small earthquake centered near the Los Angeles-Orange county line jolted the Southland from the San Fernando Valley to south Orange County, but apparently caused no damage. The 11:07 p.m. tremor, measured at a magnitude of 3.7, was centered one mile northwest of Brea. Police agencies and utilities reported no damage and a Southern California Edison spokesman reported no outages. “We felt it,” said Sgt. Warren Wright, watch commander of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s station in Walnut. Richard Stead, a graduate student at Caltech, said the quake was unlikely to cause damage, but said there is a 5% chance that it will be followed by a larger quake within five days. The quake is the second to rock Southern California in two days. On Friday, a magnitude 3.4 quake originated in the ocean, 27 miles southwest of Oceanside in northern San Diego County.
