Myricks Jumps 28 Feet 1/4 Inch in Modesto Meet

MODESTO — Larry Myricks leaped 28 feet 1/4 inch to win the long jump Saturday in the 48th Modesto Invitational track and field meet.
Myricks, 33, was an easy winner over Mike Powell, who jumped 26-11 1/4.
Wolfgang Schmidt, the East German defector now competing for West Germany, won the discus with a throw of 222-0 on his last attempt; Doug Padilla outkicked Julius Kariuki of Kenya in the mile to win in 4:00.35; Scott Davis took the pole vault at 18-8 1/4, and Greg Moses pulled a mild upset in the 100-meter dash, edging Mark Witherspoon in a wind-aided 10.12 seconds.
Witherspoon came back to win the 200 in 20.67.
