CHICAGO — Speed-skating champion Bonnie Blair will make her cycling debut when the 1989 Sundance Juice Sparkler Grand Prix of Cycling rolls through Illinois early next month.
“It’s all very new to me, but I’m looking forward to it,” said Blair, who won gold and bronze medals in speed-skating at last year’s Winter Olympics in Calgary. “A lot depends on how quickly I adjust.”
Blair will race in the match sprint competition in the event at the Northbrook Velodrome, June 1 through 3. Match sprint races cover 1,000 meters, but only the final 200 meters are timed. Riders play a “cat-and-mouse” game during the first part of the race to get the best position for the final sprint.
