Verdict in North’s Iran-Contra Trial

Who says they don’t report good news? In one day the public was treated to an affirmation of how our system can work--the space shuttle achieved orbit, Proposition 103 was upheld, and North was found guilty.
Reagan’s “American Hero” is now a convicted felon. He may no longer call himself lieutenant colonel, although many conservatives would like to canonize him.
He deservedly joins the ranks of Nixon Administration aides H.R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman and G. Gordon Liddy--all co-conspirators against the separation of powers. They now know that there is no divine right of Presidents.
Many thoughtful people believe that the Watergate scandal was America’s darkest hour. But they are wrong. It was our greatest achievement. We have the mechanism for expelling rogues from our government; our Constitution works.
As North has discovered, it can even survive shredding.
